A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
On Mac, the remaining recovery options are limited, but these are the supported steps:
- Reopen Word and check whether the Document Recovery pane appears. If it does, open the most recent version listed and save it immediately.
- In Finder, select Go > Go to Folder or press Shift+Command+G.
- Check this AutoRecovery folder:
/Users/<username>/Library/Containers/com.Microsoft/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery - Also check this Word AutoRecovery location, since the folder can vary by Word version:
~/Library/Containers/com.Microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery - If an AutoRecovery file is found, copy it to the desktop and try opening it in Word.
- If the document opens, save it immediately.
Important details:
- The AutoRecovery folder is hidden, so Go to Folder is required.
- If Word was closed normally and Don’t Save was selected, the AutoRecover file is deleted.
- AutoRecover is not a substitute for regular saving.
- By default, AutoRecover in Office for Mac saves a recovery file every 10 minutes.
- If the file was manually saved, previous AutoRecover files are removed.
If the missing pages are not in either AutoRecovery folder and Word does not show a recovery pane, the remaining self-service recovery options are unfortunately very limited.
For future protection, storing files on OneDrive or SharePoint and using AutoSave is the safest option for Microsoft 365 subscribers.
