Hello!

When I launch Excel, it reports an error and asks if I want to fix it now. I click "Fix." Nothing happens, and Excel does not start.

    Hi, @Olga Lypka

May I know what troubleshooting steps have you already taken?

Have you tried manual repair instead? If you haven't tried it yet, please follow the steps below.

If you haven't tried anything yet please start by:

First, please check if your Microsoft 365 is active or if your Office license is listed. You can do this by signing in at https://account.microsoft.com/services if the subscription is active or if your Office license is listed, try these steps:

    Repair Office apps:

    • Press Windows + R, type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
    • Find Microsoft 365 or Office in the list, select it, then choose Change > Quick Repair.
    • If that doesn’t help, run the repair again but select Online Repair instead.

    Check for updates:

    • Open any Office app (if it opens even briefly), go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
    • Restart your device after repair and try opening the apps again.

If the apps still don’t open, please let me know if you’re using Microsoft 365 or a one-time purchase version (like Office 2021), so I can guide you with the next specific steps.

Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions or concerns.

Click "Add comment" to let me know.

    Thanks!

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Restart the device Wait a few minutes, restart Windows, sign in again, and try Excel.
    2. Start Excel in Safe Mode This checks whether an add-in is blocking startup.
      • Press Windows key + R
      • Type excel /safe and press Enter
      • If Excel opens, go to File > Options > Add-Ins
      • In Manage, select the Excel add-in type or COM Add-ins, then select Go
      • Clear one add-in at a time, select OK, and restart Excel normally
If Excel starts after disabling an add-in, that add-in is the cause. Older add-ins such as Abbyy FineReader, PowerWord, and Dragon Naturally Speaking are specifically called out as possible problem add-ins.
    3. Repair Office If Safe Mode does not help, repair Office from Windows:
      • Open Control Panel
      • Go to Programs > Programs and Features
      • Select the Office product
      • Choose Change
      • Run Quick Repair first
On Windows 11, repair can also be started from:
      • Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features
      • Select the Office app
      • Open Advanced options
      • Select Repair if available
    4. If Quick Repair does not fix it, use Online Repair An Online Repair is the next repair option recommended when Office apps still fail to start.
    5. If Excel still will not open Continue with broader Excel startup troubleshooting such as checking startup folders, conflicting background programs, and ensuring Office is fully updated.
