Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
For Outlook.com, check these common causes in order:
- Check the Other tab if Focused Inbox is enabled. Messages can land there instead of Inbox.
- Check the Junk Email folder and Junk Email settings. If a message is there by mistake, mark it as not junk.
- Check Deleted Items. If the message was moved there, restore it. If it is not there, use Recover items deleted from this folder from within Deleted Items.
- Check the Archive folder. Archived messages do not appear in Inbox.
- Clear any message filtering by selecting Filter above the message list and choosing All.
- Check Rules settings for Inbox or Sweep rules that may be moving messages to another folder.
- Check whether email forwarding is enabled.
- Make sure mailbox or Microsoft cloud storage is not full. If storage is full, mail sent during that time is bounced back to the sender and is unrecoverable.
- If a specific sender’s messages are missing, ask the sender to review Sender Support in Outlook.com.
- If unusual account activity is suspected, review recent sign-in activity for the Microsoft account.
If mail is missing only in the app but not on the web, that points to a sync issue on that device. If Outlook.com itself is missing the mail, the folder, rule, filter, forwarding, or storage checks above are the supported path.
