Try these steps in order:
- Update Office
- Open any Office app.
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
- If Update Now is not shown, select Enable Updates first.
- Start Word in Safe Mode to check add-ins
- Select Search, type run, and open Run.
- Type
winword /aand press Enter. - This starts Word without add-ins and global templates.
- If Word opens this way, the issue is likely related to add-ins or templates.
- Run an Online Repair of Office
- In Windows, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Office.
- Select the three-dot menu > Modify.
- Choose Online Repair, then select Repair.
- Note: Online Repair reinstalls Office components.
- Check Windows Update for driver and system updates
- In Windows 11, go to Start > type settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install any available updates.
If Word opens but a specific document does not, try:
- Open and Repair the document
- In Word, select File > Open > Browse.
- Select the file.
- Select the arrow next to Open > Open and Repair.
- Insert the document into a new blank file
- In Word, select File > New > Blank Document.
- On the Insert tab, select Object > Text from File.
- Select the affected file, then select Insert.
