A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
I'm so sorry about your situation, Ao.
Losing several hours of work is a serious problem, especially if it's your postgraduate proposal. However, there's a few limitations I need to be honest with you:
- Realistically, Word can recover the document, but only if a recoverable copy still exists somewhere.
- Microsoft cannot locate or restore an unsaved Word document (remotely) if no recoverable copy exists.
Word can only recover a copy that was actually preserved by AutoRecovery, AutoSave/cloud storage, or a backup. Here are all the possible places that can actually contain such a copy:
- Word’s AutoRecovery folder
- Go to
/Users/<username>/Library/Containers/com.Microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery - Replace
<username>with your Mac username and check anything corresponding to 14 September 2026
- Go to
- If the proposal had previously been saved to OneDrive, check that stored document and its version history.
- If you use Time Machine, check whether it has a backup of the folder in which the proposal was previously stored.
If all the options above failed, then unfortunately there may simply be no copy left for Word to retrieve. Recent Files or browsing history can indicate that a document existed, but they cannot reconstruct the document itself.
I know that is not the outcome you are looking for, but no one can somehow make proposal "reappear." At this stage, I think it's better to be direct so you know what's the best path forward, maybe rewriting the proposal when you still have time.
