A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
If Microsoft 365 Personal was paid but Word shows the account or product as deactivated, use this order:
- Close all Office apps.
- Go to your Services & subscriptions page and sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used to buy Microsoft 365 Personal.
- Check the Microsoft 365 status:
- If it shows expired, renew it.
- If it shows active, the billing is likely correct and Office may need to refresh activation.
- Open Word, go to File > Account, sign out of the accounts shown, close Word, then open Word again and sign in with the same Microsoft account that owns the subscription.
- If Word still shows Product Deactivated or editing is blocked, select Update Options > Update Now from File > Account.
- If a yellow ACCOUNT NOTICE appears, check the payment method on the Payment options page and update it if there is an error, then restart Word.
Important checks:
- If the subscription was renewed recently, the license inside Office may not have refreshed yet even though billing is correct. Signing out and back in can force Office to pull the license again.
- If Microsoft 365 was bought as a physical box or card, the subscription does not start until the product key is redeemed.
- If Word is needed immediately, use Microsoft 365 for the web at microsoft365.com or Office on the web at Office.com.
If the subscription status online is correct but Word still stays deactivated, contact Microsoft Support. If this is a work or school account, contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 admin or IT department.
