Critical Microsoft 365 Localization Defect: Can't change SharePoint Root Site Language After Tenant Creation - need immediate fix

Our Microsoft 365 tenant was originally created in Austria, which resulted in German being set as the default language for the SharePoint root site. However, we are a global organization with entities in many countries, and English is our primary business language, especiallly for our entity located in the United States. Microsoft support confirmed that some of these settings cannot be changed after tenant creation and the default root language cannot be changed. This causes ongoing localization issues across SharePoint, OneDrive, notifications, Excel files and sharing.

 

Examples of issues:

  • Shared Excel files displaying German date formats and European accounting format.
  • Ntifications appear in German when file/folder is shared.
  • OneDrive and SharePoint folder names appear in German.
  • Shared files presented to external users (customers/vendors) displaying German regional format, and accounting format in euro.

This negatively impacts our employees and, more importantly, our customers.

 

Please provide a supported methods to change the SharePoint root-site language and related tenant localization settings after creation.

This limitation creates a significant business impact for global organizations that operate across multiple countries and regions.

Organizations should not be forced into a costly tenant migration simply becuase a tenant was initially created with the wrong language.

    Unfortunately, there is currently no supported method to change the primary language of an existing SharePoint Online root site after it has been created.

    Since you have already contacted Microsoft Support and they confirmed that the tenant's default/root language cannot be changed after tenant creation, there is no additional SharePoint setting that I can recommend overriding that limitation.

    However, there are some supported alternatives depending on what you are trying to achieve:

    • Create a new SharePoint site with English as its primary language. The primary language is selected when the site is created.
    • Replace the current root site with the new English site. SharePoint supports replacing the tenant's root site with an eligible site by using the supported root site swap process. This changes which site is served at the root URL, but it does not change the tenant's original provisioning language. Microsoft has changed the SharePoint Admin Center experience over time, and many tenants no longer expose a Replace site button.
