Email blocked due to daily limit - What is the daily limit?

I run a scout troop and volunteer with our Scouting America council. I am not sending spam… everyone I emailed is a personal contact. I have sent 15 emails today; I added up email addresses and the total appears to be roughly 139 however many of those are duplications. I would saw less than 100 unique email addresses today.

Please let me know how I can use outlook.com more efficiently. This is not the first time this has happened.

Hello,

I wish Microsoft would not simply state that the sending limit is 500, because that number can be misleading. In reality, 500 is only the absolute maximum under perfect conditions, and I have never seen users reach it, just like a credit score of 900.

Many users hit the daily sending limit at a much lower number. Unfortunately, no one can tell you exactly what your limit is because it is dynamic and varies from one account to another. It works somewhat like a credit score and may be affected by factors such as account history, usage patterns, whether the account is verified, whether it is free or paid, the type of content being sent, and the number of recipients.

From what I have seen while helping users here, sending one message to many recipients is one of the biggest factors. Email signatures, HTML formatting, and links may also increase the chance of triggering the anti-spam system. I have seen some users hit the limit after sending a single email to only 10 or 20 recipients.

Unfortunately, even after changing your sending habits, the limit may not improve immediately. It can take time for the account's sending reputation to recover.

I am sorry I cannot give you a more precise number, but there is simply no fixed limit that applies equally to every user.

For now, I suggest that you let it cool down and send emails in plain text format and one user at a time.

For Outlook.com, the documented limits for Microsoft 365 subscribers are:

Daily recipients: 5,000
Maximum recipients per message: 500
Daily non-relationship recipients: 1,000

A non-relationship recipient is someone never emailed before. Limits can also be lower for non-subscribers and can vary based on usage history. New Outlook.com accounts can have a temporarily lower sending quota until credibility is established.

If sending was blocked even though the total appears well under 5,000, the most relevant Outlook.com guidance is to improve account trust and sending patterns:

Make sure account info is fully updated: phone number, alternate email, profile details.
Use a strong password with upper/lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
Add recipients to Contacts in Outlook.com.
Communicate frequently with Contacts so they become established relationship recipients.
Use the Microsoft Authenticator app to verify identity.
If sending to groups repeatedly, split mail into smaller batches and avoid sending many messages rapidly, since temporary blocks can still occur.

Other things to check when mail is blocked:

Attachment size: Outlook.com can’t send messages with attachments larger than 25 MB.
Signature issues: if the message has a signature, remove it and try again.
If a recipient address is correct but a non-delivery report was received, use Sender Support in Outlook.com.

Since this has happened more than once, the most practical way to use Outlook.com more efficiently is:

keep recipients in Contacts,
send to smaller groups,
spread sends out over time,
avoid sudden spikes in outbound mail,
make sure the account profile and security details are complete.
