Word constantly disconnects from the HP Printer Spooler

Word constantly disconnects from the HP Printer Spooler. I have used the search function to find "Services" and then found the "Print Spooler" and restarted it and this does not work unless I turn off the computer, restart the printer and then restart the computer. After completing this process Word will allow me to print immediately after I open the Word App and then it disconnects from the print spooler again.

There is no problem when I try and print from Excel, Gmail, or from my phone. Only Word seems to have this problem.

This started to be a problem about a month ago.

Hi, I'm Bernard. I'm happy to help!

Since the issue only happens in your Word app, this means there might just be an incompatibility with the Office app. In this case, kindly follow the steps provided by the AI answer. If the issue persists, I recommend reinstalling the Office app by following the steps below:

Press the Windows key + R, then type in:

    appwiz.cpl

    Then hit OK

Look for the Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 app > Right-click, then select Uninstall

Follow the prompts to uninstall your Office app.

Then reinstall your Office app by following the steps from the link below:

Since printing works from Excel, Gmail, and the phone, but fails only in Word, this points to a Word or Office issue rather than the HP printer itself.

    Try this in order:

    1. Test whether Word can print without using the HP printer.
      • Open Word and create a new blank document.
      • Go to File > Print.
      • Select Microsoft Print to PDF.
      • Try printing.
      • If the spooler stops here too, the issue is likely with Word or Office.
    2. Repair Microsoft 365 or Office.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
      • Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
      • Select Modify.
      • Run Quick Repair first.
      • Test printing from Word again.
      • If the issue continues, run Online Repair.
    3. Restart the Print Spooler service again after the repair.
      • Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
      • Locate Print Spooler.
      • Right-click Print Spooler and select Restart.
    4. Check Word print settings.
      • In Word, go to File > Print.
      • Confirm the HP printer is selected.
      • Make sure Print to file is not selected.
      • Verify page size, orientation, layout, and page range.
    5. Confirm Windows can still print to the printer.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
      • Select the printer, then Manage > Printer properties.
      • Select Print Test Page.
      • If the test page prints, that further supports this being isolated to Word.
    6. Update or reinstall the printer driver if needed.
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Expand Printers.
      • Right-click the printer and select Update driver.
      • If no update is available, select Uninstall device, restart the PC, and let Windows reinstall the printer driver.
    7. If the spooler keeps failing, run the Windows printer troubleshooter in Get Help.

The strongest next step for this specific symptom is Office repair, because the printer works from other apps and the failure is isolated to Word.
