Using New Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
For Outlook on Windows, this is commonly caused by the Google sign-in window failing during authentication rather than by the mailbox settings themselves.
Try these steps in order:
- In Outlook, select File > Add Account and start the Google sign-in again.
- If the sign-in window shows Something went wrong, select Retry.
- When the Google permissions page appears, select Allow.
- If the browser sign-in completes but Outlook still fails, make sure the Google consent page includes the permission for Microsoft apps & services to “Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail.” If that box was missed, the sign-in can fail or the account may not sync.
- If the account was previously added and removed, add it again from File > Add Account and repeat the browser sign-in.
If the sign-in window stays blank, there is also a known Outlook issue when adding Google Workspace accounts that can show a JavaScript/browser error. Warning: the following workaround requires editing the Windows registry. Incorrect registry changes can cause system problems. Back up the registry first.
- Close Outlook.
- Open Start, type regedit.exe, and press Enter.
- Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION - Find OUTLOOK.EXE.
- Edit it, select Decimal, and set the value to 11001.
- Close Registry Editor and restart Outlook.
Note: while using that workaround, Outlook Today may not display correctly.
If the problem is specifically with classic Outlook and Gmail/Google sign-in, Microsoft also documented fixes in newer builds for Google sign-in failures and blank/failed browser-based authentication.
