Why are you making things so complicated now? Why is Microsoft Word no longer accessible on my computer by clicking the icon?

I’d rather narrow down what changed before getting into a long list of troubleshooting steps.

When you select the Word icon, what exactly happens: nothing at all, or do you see an error message? Also, if you press the Windows key, search for Word, and open it from the search result, does Word start normally?

If it does, we can focus specifically on the shortcut rather than troubleshooting Word itself.

If Word used to open by clicking the icon and no longer does, the first thing to determine is whether the problem is with Word itself or only with the shortcut/icon.

Please try this:

1. Press the Windows key.

Type:

Word

Open Microsoft Word from the search results.

If Word opens normally this way, the desktop/taskbar shortcut is probably damaged. You can remove the old shortcut and create a new one by finding Word in the Start menu and pinning it again to the taskbar or creating a new desktop shortcut.

If Word does not open from the Start menu either, press:

Windows + R

and run:

winword /a

This starts Word without add-ins and custom templates. If it opens successfully, an add-in or Word configuration may be preventing normal startup.

If Word still does not start, the next step would be to repair Office:

Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Microsoft 365 / Office → Modify → Quick Repair

If Quick Repair does not help, try Online Repair.
