How to change my outlook work account to my personal outlook account

To stop Outlook and other Microsoft apps from sending sign-in back to the old work account, remove the retired work account from Windows and Outlook, then set the personal account as primary where available.

1. Remove the old work account from Windows
   • Open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
   • If the Canadore College account is listed, select it and choose Disconnect.
   • Restart the PC.
2. Remove saved credentials for the old work account
   • Open Control Panel > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials.
   • Remove entries related to the old organization account, Outlook, Microsoft Office, or Microsoft 365 that reference the retired work account.
3. If the old account still keeps returning, clear cached sign-in data
   • Delete the contents of these folders, then restart the PC:

   • Risk: this clears cached sign-in tokens, so Microsoft apps may require sign-in again afterward.
4. In Outlook for Windows, remove the old account
   • Open Outlook.
   • Go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
   • Select the old work account and choose Remove.
5. Add or confirm the personal account in Outlook
   • In new Outlook for Windows: View > View settings > Accounts > Your accounts > Add Account.
   • Sign in with the personal Outlook account.
   • If needed, under the account’s Manage option, select Set as primary account.
6. If a “Which account do you want to use?” prompt appears
   • That means the same email address exists as both a work or school account and a personal account.
   • To reduce that prompt for the personal Microsoft account, rename the personal account by changing its primary alias in Manage how you sign in.
   • If the work account was created by an organization using the same domain, that organization must remove the conflicting account on their side.
7. If the issue is in the browser or Outlook on the web
   • Sign out of the work account.
   • Use a private browsing window and sign in only with the personal account.
   • If the browser still redirects to the organization, check whether the work account is still active in the Windows account list and remove it there first.

If the retired work account is still shown in the My Account portal, it can also be switched between organizations from the organization switcher, but password and account management still follow the home organization. If display language or some settings are locked there, only the organization admin can change them.
