Try these checks in order:
- Verify what closing the lid does.
- Right-click Start > Power Options > Additional power settings.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- Make sure the lid-close action is set to Sleep, not Shut down.
- Install the latest Windows and Surface updates.
- Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Install all available updates. For Surface Laptop 7th Edition, recent updates include fixes for black screen on restart, wake behavior, and system stability during sleep or power-state transitions.
- Disconnect accessories before testing.
- Unplug USB devices, SD cards, external monitors, docks, Type Cover, and other accessories.
- Some connected accessories or docks can interfere with startup or wake behavior.
- If the device appears unresponsive when opening the lid, try the display reset shortcut.
- Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B.
- If the problem continues, check for stop code behavior.
- Unexpected restarts in Windows can be caused by hardware, drivers, or software.
- If a blue or black screen appears before restart, note the stop code shown on screen.
- Use the standard Windows restart troubleshooting steps.
- Remove any newly added hardware.
- Start in safe mode if needed.
- Open Device Manager from the Start button menu and look for devices with an exclamation mark. Update the driver, or if needed disable or uninstall the affected device.
- Make sure the drive has enough free space; 10% to 15% free space is recommended.
- If the issue started recently and continues after updates, use recovery options.
- Restore Windows using a restore point or another recovery option from Recovery options in Windows 11.
- If the Surface gets stuck on a logo screen after opening the lid, force a restart.
- Press and hold the power button until the logo screen appears, about 20 seconds.
- Use this only when necessary, because holding the power button interrupts normal shutdown.
If the device is specifically shutting down after long lid-closed periods, the most relevant first actions are: confirm the lid action is Sleep, install all Windows/Surface updates, and test again with all accessories disconnected.
