Outlook is not showing emails from the last 2 days when I search. Older emails appear normally.

I'm using Outlook for Windows. What troubleshooting steps should I try?

Check that Outlook is searching the correct mailbox/folder.

Restart Outlook and Windows.

For classic Outlook on Windows, try these steps in order:

    1. Check whether Outlook is still indexing
      • Open Outlook and select the Search box.
      • On the ribbon, select Search Tools > Indexing Status.
      • If items are still being indexed, wait a few minutes and check again. If the count is not decreasing, continue.
    2. Run the Windows Search troubleshooter
      • Windows 11: Start > Settings > Privacy & Security > Searching Windows > Indexer troubleshooter.
      • Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Search and Indexing > Run the troubleshooter.
    3. Rebuild the search catalog
      • Exit Outlook.
      • Open Indexing Options in Windows Control Panel.
      • Select Advanced > Rebuild > OK > Close.
      • If the issue started after a Windows update, rebuilding can take a couple of days to fully complete.
    4. Rebuild the Search Index from Outlook
      • In Outlook, go to File > Options > Search.
      • Select Indexing Options > Advanced.
      • Under Troubleshooting, select Rebuild.
    5. Include Deleted Items in search if needed
      • Go to File > Options > Search.
      • Enable Include messages from the Deleted items folder in each data file when searching in All Items.
      • Restart Outlook.
    6. Use filters to narrow results
      • If Outlook finds too many results, older or expected items may not be displayed. Narrow the search criteria with filters and test again.
    7. Create a new Outlook profile to test
      • In Outlook, go to File > Account Settings > Manage Profiles.
      • Or close Outlook and open Mail in Windows Control Panel.
      • Select Show Profiles > Add, create a new profile, then start Outlook with that profile and test search.
      • If search works there, the original profile may be the problem.
    8. If this started after KB5008212 or a Windows 11 upgrade
      • This issue affected recent email search for locally indexed accounts such as POP, IMAP, and offline Exchange.
      • Microsoft resolved it in later Windows updates. If the device is missing those updates, install the applicable Windows update, then rebuild the index if needed.
    9. Temporary workaround for urgent searching
      • Outlook can be forced to use its built-in search instead of Windows Search by changing the registry.
      • Warning: Registry changes are risky and can cause serious problems if done incorrectly. Back up the registry first.
      • The documented workaround is to create HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search and set PreventIndexingOutlook to 1, then restart Outlook. Set it back to 0 to undo the workaround.

If search still does not finish indexing after rebuilding, Microsoft recommends contacting Support for Windows Desktop Search assistance.
