How Camera app deletions of windows 11 works

i deleted a vid which was displayed as a thumbnail at the bottom right corner of the camera app. Selected the thumbnail/preview. And deleted in it . so are they permanently gone or are they recoverable? Has SSD and Trim too. It has been 3-4 months.

Honestly, looking on the bright side, if you're planning to give your PC to someone else, this is actually a relief.

AI tools often debate the exact technicalities. TRIM sends the erase command right away, while the SSD's background cleanup actually wipes the cells shortly after. But regardless of the exact timeframe, after 3 to 4 months of daily SSD use, those videos are 100% gone and completely unrecoverable by the next owner.

If you want total peace of mind for all your other personal files before handing over the PC, you can do a full Windows reset:

  1. Press "Windows + I" to open Settings and go to "System > Recovery";
  2. Next to Reset this PC, click "Reset PC";
  3. Choose "Remove everything";
  4. Select either "Cloud download" or "Local reinstall";
  5. On the Additional settings screen, click "Change settings", toggle "Clean data" to "Yes", click "Confirm", and click "Next" to proceed.

This will safely wipe all your account data and files for the new user. Hope this gives you peace of mind.

When you delete a video from the preview thumbnail in the Windows 11 Camera app, it isn't wiped immediately; it gets sent to your Recycle Bin.

First, open your Recycle Bin and search for the file or sort by date. If you haven't manually emptied the bin and you don't have Storage Sense set up to auto-clean items, the video could still be sitting there.

If it's not in the Recycle Bin, then unfortunately it is unrecoverable. Because the drive is an SSD, purging a file triggers TRIM, which clears those data blocks almost immediately or within a few minutes. Once that happens, standard data recovery software won't be able to restore the file.

    Yes. You're right. I had the behavior of the main Photos app in mind, which does send files to the Recycle Bin, forgetting that the Camera app preview handles deletion directly and bypasses the Recycle Bin.

    Since it bypassed the Recycle Bin entirely 3 to 4 months ago, the TRIM on your SSD was triggered at that exact moment. Unfortunately, this confirms that the video is permanently gone and cannot be restored.

    The only remaining option is if you had an automated backup running at the time. Do you happen to have File History, or any third-party backup software active back then?
