Unable to log into Word Document and Everything is Gray / Please Advise

If Word is gray and only allows viewing, Office is not activated or is signed in with the wrong account.

Try this in order:

1. Sign in with the Microsoft account that was used to buy or redeem Office
   • In Word, if prompted to activate, sign in with the Microsoft account instead of entering the product key.
   • If the wrong account is signed in, Word can show Unlicensed Product or say no Office products were found.
   • Check whether the license is attached to the account at Services & subscriptions.
2. Do not use the product key again if it was already redeemed
   • If the key was already used once, the Office product is added to the Microsoft account.
   • After that, Office should be installed and activated from the Microsoft account, not by re-entering the key.
   • Office.com/setup is only for redeeming a new, unused product key.
3. Check whether the subscription or license is showing correctly
   • If the account does not show Office or Microsoft 365 on the Services & subscriptions page, that is likely the wrong account.
   • If Word shows a yellow or red SUBSCRIPTION EXPIRED banner, the subscription must be renewed to continue using Office.
4. Check for multiple Office installs
   • Multiple installed copies can cause activation conflicts.
   • In Windows 10 or Windows 11:
     • Open Control Panel
     • Select Programs > Programs and Features
     • Search for office
     • If more than one version appears, uninstall the version not being used
     • Restart the computer
     • Open Word again and sign in if prompted
5. If the product key says it is invalid or does not work
   • A blocked or non-working key should be taken back to the seller for a refund.
   • Microsoft states that keys sold separately from the software are often stolen or unauthorized and may be blocked.
6. If the key was lost or damaged
   • With valid proof of purchase, Microsoft support may be able to replace the key or provide other options through the Microsoft support page.
7. If Word still will not activate
   • Use the guided support troubleshooter for Office activation issues.
