I previously signed into a Microsoft account using my Gmail address. Now Microsoft says the account doesn't exist when I try to sign in or recover it, but when I try to create a new Microsoft account with the same Gmail address, Microsoft says the email is already associated with a Microsoft account.

    Hello,

May I please know when was the last time you were able to sign in with your Microsoft account successfully?

Note that, if you haven't signed in with your Microsoft account for more than 2 years, your account will be put into an inactive state and will be closed. You cannot use the account recovery form to recover your account.

For security reasons, Microsoft no longer recycles email addresses. If your account has been deleted, the email address will no longer be available to other users, so neither you nor anyone else can recreate an account using the same address.

This usually means the Gmail address is still reserved on a Microsoft account, but it is not being accepted as a current sign-in username.

    Try this in order:

    1. Check whether the Gmail address is recognized as a Microsoft account.
      • Go to the Microsoft account sign-in page at https://account.microsoft.com and enter the Gmail address.
      • If a password prompt appears, that Gmail address is a Microsoft account.
      • If the message says We couldn't find an account with that username or That Microsoft account doesn't exist, verify the spelling and domain carefully.
    2. Run the Microsoft Sign-in Helper.
      • Use the Sign-in Helper at https://aka.ms/sign-in-helper.
      • Enter the Gmail address or mobile number tied to the account.
      • If the tool detects a problem, it will tell what action to take next.
    3. If the account has been inactive for more than two years, it may have been deleted.
      • In that case, the account cannot be reopened.
    4. If the Gmail address was only used as a verification method, not as the current sign-in alias, normal sign-in can fail.
      • Microsoft states that Google credentials cannot be used to sign in to a Microsoft account.
      • A Gmail address can be used to prove identity, and it can also be added as a way to sign in only through the Microsoft account alias management flow.
    5. If the account was previously changed or the sign-in alias no longer works, use the account recovery form.
      • Complete the form from a device and location previously used with that account if possible.
      • If two-step verification is enabled and none of the alternate verification methods are accessible, support cannot reset the account or change account details.
    6. If access is regained, add another alias or review sign-in aliases.
      • Sign in to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft and add another email if needed.
      • Then set the correct alias as primary.

    Important:

    • Do not create a new account with that Gmail address unless Microsoft confirms the old account is gone.
    • Microsoft support agents cannot send password reset links or directly change account details for protected accounts.
