Excel 2016 cannot open .xls file type after updating on win 11

Hello Support Team,

We are experiencing a critical issue with Microsoft Excel after the recent security update.

Environment

OS: Windows 11 (Build 22631) Excel 2016 Standard Version: 16.0.5565.1001 Installation Path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\EXCEL.EXE

Issue Description After installing the latest Excel security updates, Excel copy and paste functionality stopped working. The following symptoms are observed:

Crash Information

Application Name: EXCEL.EXE Application Version: 16.0.5565.1001 Exception Code: c0000005 Fault Module: EXCEL.EXE Event Name: APPCRASH

Troubleshooting Already Performed We have already attempted all common remediation steps without success:

  • Restarted Excel and Windows.
  • Disabled all Excel Add-ins.
  • Started Excel in Safe Mode.
  • Performed Office Repair (where available).
  • Reinstalled Microsoft Office completely.
  • Removed and re-added user profile.
  • Checked Clipboard-related settings.
  • Attempted to uninstall update KB5002914 through Control Panel and Windows Update.
  • Attempted command-line removal of KB5002914.
  • Tested with new blank workbooks and different user accounts.

The issue persists and is impacting normal Excel operations.

Attached are the crash details and screenshots for reference.

Please advise on any available workaround, hotfix, or recommendations.

    Based on the latest information available, Microsoft has recognized this as a known issue introduced by a recent update and has documented it in Description of the security update for Excel 2016: September 08, 2026 (KB5002914)

    As you are using Excel 2016 Standard, you can try removing the affected update by following these steps:

    1. Search for Command Prompt in Windows Search, then select Run as administrator.
    2. Run the following command: 
         "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE16\Oarpmany.exe" /removereleaseinpatch "{90160000-0012-0000-1000-0000000FF1CE}" "{27882596-A8ED-4382-9C71-6CD2DD19F732}" "1033" "0"

    This command will remove the latest Excel 2016 update that is associated with the issue.
