A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
This is usually a sign-in or licensing mismatch after the subscription change, not that the files are gone.
Try this in order:
- Confirm the active subscription
- Go to Services & subscriptions on the Microsoft account dashboard.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account now associated with Microsoft 365 Personal.
- Verify that the subscription is active.
- Check Office account inside Word
- Open Word.
- Go to File > Account.
- If an old account is still signed in, sign out of Office and close all Office apps.
- Update Office
- In an Office app, go to Help > Check for Updates.
- Turn on Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date.
- Install all available updates.
- Then try opening the old documents again.
- If subscription features still are not available, reinstall Office
- First uninstall Microsoft 365 completely using the uninstall troubleshooter.
- Restart the PC when prompted.
- Then reinstall Microsoft 365.
- This can clear old licensing data left behind from the previous subscription.
- If Office shows a buy/renew/reactivate notice
- Reactivate the subscription using the correct Microsoft account.
- If there is a renewal problem and Word is needed immediately, use Microsoft 365 for the web apps in a browser until the desktop apps are working again.
If the issue is specifically that older Word files are blocked from opening, install the latest Office updates first, then in Word use:
- File > Open
- Select the document
- In the Open dropdown, choose Recover Text
- Open the file, then save it as Word Document (.docx)
