Changed MS 365 Subscriptions from Family to Personal. Old Word docs not open in MS 365 Personal. What do I do?

    Hi Charles,

Good day. The change from Microsoft 365 Family to Personal do not normally prevent older Word documents from opening. Both subscriptions include the desktop version of Word, so this is more likely more related to the files itself, Word activation, or file association rather than a direct subscription compatibility issue.

If the older files are in an older format such as .doc, they should still be supported by Microsoft 365, although some formatting or features may not work exactly the same.

    Try doing this first:

    1. Open Word by itself, then go to File > Open > Browse and select one of the older documents. This helps determine whether the problem is with Word or the with the file.
    2. If it still won't open, right-click the file > Properties and check the file type and whether Windows shows an "Unblock" option.
    3. If Word gives a specific error message, can you share it? That will help determine whether you're dealing with a format issue, a damaged file, or an activation problem.

Also, make sure you're signed into Word with the Microsoft account that now has the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription.

    Regards,
    Jhun

This is usually a sign-in or licensing mismatch after the subscription change, not that the files are gone.

    Try this in order:

    1. Confirm the active subscription
      • Go to Services & subscriptions on the Microsoft account dashboard.
      • Sign in with the Microsoft account now associated with Microsoft 365 Personal.
      • Verify that the subscription is active.
    2. Check Office account inside Word
      • Open Word.
      • Go to File > Account.
      • If an old account is still signed in, sign out of Office and close all Office apps.
    3. Update Office
      • In an Office app, go to Help > Check for Updates.
      • Turn on Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date.
      • Install all available updates.
      • Then try opening the old documents again.
    4. If subscription features still are not available, reinstall Office
      • First uninstall Microsoft 365 completely using the uninstall troubleshooter.
      • Restart the PC when prompted.
      • Then reinstall Microsoft 365.
      • This can clear old licensing data left behind from the previous subscription.
    5. If Office shows a buy/renew/reactivate notice
      • Reactivate the subscription using the correct Microsoft account.
      • If there is a renewal problem and Word is needed immediately, use Microsoft 365 for the web apps in a browser until the desktop apps are working again.

If the issue is specifically that older Word files are blocked from opening, install the latest Office updates first, then in Word use:

    • File > Open
    • Select the document
    • In the Open dropdown, choose Recover Text
    • Open the file, then save it as Word Document (.docx)
