    Good day Daniel Wilson

I think your headset is getting stuck between audio and mic modes, common with some Bluetooth profiles. What’s happening is your laptop’s Bluetooth stack is switching between A2DP (for high‑quality audio) and HFP/HSP (for mic input), and unfortunately, most devices can’t use both at once unless the headset firmware and driver fully support hands‑free duplex.

Update your Bluetooth and audio drivers through HP Support Assistant.

In Windows Sound settings, make sure the headset is selected as both playback and recording device.

If it still flips modes, disable “Hands‑Free Telephony” under the headset’s Bluetooth properties that often stabilizes audio.

Re‑pair the headset after rebooting to refresh the profile handshake.

I hope this information can help you solve the problem.

This is expected behavior for many Bluetooth headsets.

A Bluetooth headset often cannot use high-quality stereo audio and the built-in microphone at the same time over the standard Bluetooth profiles. In practice, that means:

    • High-quality audio mode: playback works well, but the headset mic may not be available.
    • Headset/microphone mode: the mic works, but audio quality drops.

If Hands-Free Telephony was disabled for the headset, that can also remove microphone support while keeping better audio playback.

    What to check in Windows:

    1. Make sure the headset is paired and connected in Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
    2. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
    3. Under Input, check whether the Bluetooth headset microphone appears as a selectable input device.
    4. Test the microphone from the device properties page using Start test under Microphone test.
    5. If the headset is connected but audio behavior is unstable, update or reinstall the Bluetooth and audio drivers in Device Manager:
      • Expand Bluetooth and update the Bluetooth driver.
      • Expand Sound, video and game controllers and update the audio driver.
      • If needed, uninstall the device, restart the PC, and let Windows reinstall it.
    6. Check the headset manufacturer for any firmware updates, then restart both the headset and the PC and reconnect.

If the goal is to use the headset mic and keep high-quality audio at the same time, the supported answer in this scenario is usually:

    • use the headset in headset/hands-free mode and accept lower audio quality, or
    • use a separate microphone, or
    • use a headset with a dedicated USB dongle if the manufacturer supports simultaneous high-quality audio and mic.
