Using Classic Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
For a Yahoo account in classic Outlook, the most common causes are stale saved credentials in Outlook, an outdated password in Outlook after a Yahoo-side change, or Yahoo requiring Outlook to sign in again.
Try these steps in order:
- Check whether Outlook is repeatedly using old Yahoo credentials
- Close Outlook.
- Open Credential Manager from the Windows Start menu. On some systems, open Control Panel first, then Credential Manager.
- Go to Manage your credentials > Windows Credentials.
- Under Generic credentials, find entries starting with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2.
- Remove the entries for the Yahoo account.
- Restart Outlook and sign in to the Yahoo account when prompted.
- If Outlook still does not sync immediately, restart Outlook again.
- If the Yahoo password was changed recently
- After a password change, Outlook may keep using an old token for up to one hour before prompting again.
- If waiting is not preferred, use the Credential Manager steps above to force the sign-in prompt.
- Verify the password stored in Outlook
- If the password was changed with Yahoo, it must be changed on Yahoo first.
- Then update the password in Outlook.
- In Windows, open Control Panel > Mail > Email Accounts.
- Select the Yahoo account and choose Change.
- Under Logon Information, verify the User Name is the full Yahoo email address and the password is correct.
- If Outlook never asks for the Yahoo password during setup or repair
- In Control Panel > Mail > Email Accounts > New or when editing the account, make sure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked.
- If Yahoo still fails with “It’s not you, it’s us”
- That message is on the Yahoo side. For non-Microsoft accounts such as Yahoo, sign-in issues with the provider must be resolved with that provider.
- In the meantime, if access in Outlook.com is the goal, mail from the Yahoo account can be forwarded to an existing Outlook.com account.
Warning: if using the optional registry workaround for stuck Yahoo identity data, registry changes are risky and can affect Outlook sign-in behavior if the wrong key is deleted. Use the Credential Manager method first.
