VPN Gateway: Unable to Delete or Recreate It After Going Down

Problem description

I am experiencing an issue with my Azure VPN Gateway. It went down starting on September 14, 2026, around 10:00 AM Mountain Time, causing a loss of production connectivity. I attempted to delete and recreate the gateway, but it is completely locked up and cannot be deleted or rebuilt.

Environment

Product: Azure VPN Gateway. The specific subscription type is Azure pay-as-you-go. Other details such as SKU, region, resource names, tenant details, or additional identifiers are not specified in the case information.

What I've already tried

I have not tried anything yet, as the support case indicates the resource is locked and unresponsive.

Current status

My VPN Gateway remains in a locked state, unable to be deleted or recreated, with ongoing production connectivity issues. I am seeking assistance to unlock or resolve the gateway so I can restore or rebuild the connection.

Activity Logs and health status show that the gateway is in "standby" due to transient upgrades or something along those lines. Therefore no connections can be made and no deletion or control can be done to the tunnel. This is our production environment. We are hard down right now.

Hi ChrisGraham-2510 & thx for join me at Q&A platform,

If the gateway is showing Standby because of a platform upgrade and you also can't delete, reset, or modify it, this is no longer a normal VPN connection/configuration issue. It points to the VPN Gateway resource being stuck in an Azure-managed control-plane operation.

I wouldn't keep trying to delete and recreate it while that operation is active. If Azure still considers an upgrade or maintenance workflow in progress, conflicting management operations can remain blocked, and repeated delete/update requests won't clear the underlying state.

Because production connectivity is already down, this needs to be treated as a service-side outage and escalated to the Azure VPN Gateway / Networking engineering team. Give support the gateway resource ID, region, exact UTC time the outage started, Activity Log correlation IDs, current provisioning/operational state, and the entries showing the gateway entering Standby. Ask them specifically to check for a stuck platform upgrade/maintenance operation and recover or clear the gateway backend state.

If the gateway has remained in Standby for hours with all tunnels down and management operations blocked, there isn't a customer-side configuration change that can reliably recover it. Microsoft needs to inspect the gateway instances and the platform operation holding the resource before deciding whether the existing gateway can be recovered or must be reprovisioned.

    rgds,

    Alex
