Documents will not open on the Laptop Desktop

Since the IMG and MP3 files open normally, the Desktop itself does not appear to be the issue. The behavior seems specific to the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.

First, please check whether the desktop Office applications are installed locally.

-Press Windows + R, type winword, and press Enter.

• If Word opens, then Word is installed and we can investigate further.
• If Windows says it cannot find winword, Word is likely not installed on the computer.

You can also test excel and powerpnt in the same way.

-Then check the file association:

• Right-click one of the Word/Excel/PowerPoint files.
• Select Open with.
• Check whether Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or Microsoft PowerPoint is listed.

If those desktop applications are not installed, this would explain why the files do not open when you double-click them.

Also, being able to sign in to Office.com with your work account does not necessarily mean that the desktop Office applications are installed. Office.com provides the web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, which can be used through a browser.

As a quick test, try opening one of the affected documents directly through Office.com. If it opens there, the document itself is likely fine, and the issue is with the local Office application or Windows' file association.

Please provide the results for each of these checks. This will help determine exactly where the issue is occurring.

It seems that some Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files on your desktop respond when selected, but their contents or application windows do not appear on the laptop screen, while image and audio files open normally.

The document may be opening outside the visible laptop screen. First, press Windows key + P and select PC screen only. Then try opening one affected file again.

If Word, Excel, or PowerPoint appears on the taskbar but you still cannot see its window, select the app’s taskbar icon and press Windows key + Shift + Left Arrow or Right Arrow to move the window back to the laptop screen. Test again.

Open one affected file, select its Word, Excel, or PowerPoint icon on the taskbar, then press Alt + Space, press M, and press an arrow key. Move the mouse until the window appears, then select it to keep it in place. You can also press Windows + Shift + Left Arrow or Right Arrow to bring the window back from another display.

If that does not help, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, end any Word, Excel, or PowerPoint processes shown in Task Manager, restart the computer, and try again.

Also, you mentioned that this computer does not have Office installed, but that you have an Office app for work. Could you clarify what you mean by this? Also, when you try to open a document, does a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint icon appear on the taskbar?

I tried a few of these steps

This is on the actual desktop....it shouldn't matter about office, should it. plus this computer doesn't have the office app.....I do have an office app for my work stuff
