Every time my PC performs an update it doubles up on the registry files for Outlook. I'm unable to launch Outlook Classic until someone from Microsoft Support can remote access my laptop and clear the duplicate registry files.

Basic troubleshooting is discussed in the article at https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/basic-troubleshooting-steps-for-outlook/ .

The Windows registry usually doesn't need any maintenance. A possible exception is if you use some third-party "optimization" program which messes with the registry. Those programs often do more harm than good and are best avoided.

    Hi, Thomas Chimileski

The registry contains keys and values, not Outlook “files.” Repeated entries may point to a damaged Outlook profile, add-in, or navigation-pane setting, so I would avoid deleting additional registry items unless the exact keys are known.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

Press Windows key + R, enter outlook.exe /safe, and select OK. If Outlook opens, select File > Options > Add-ins. Beside Manage: COM Add-ins, select Go, clear all add-ins, and restart Outlook normally. Re-enable them one at a time to identify the problem add-in.

If Safe Mode also fails, press Windows key + R, enter outlook.exe /resetnavpane, and select OK. This rebuilds the navigation pane without deleting email.

Create a clean profile. Open Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles > Add, configure the account, then set Prompt for a profile to be used and test the new profile. Do not remove the old profile until the new one works and any local PST files are backed up.

Also check Task Manager and end any remaining Outlook or Office processes before testing again.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.

If Outlook Classic only starts after duplicate Outlook-related registry entries are cleared, the supported self-service paths in the available guidance are:

    1. Run the Outlook startup troubleshooter
      • Open the classic Outlook startup troubleshooter.
      • In the prompt, select Open if Windows shows This site is trying to open Get Help.
      • Follow the prompts in the Get Help window.
      • This applies on Windows 10 or later, on the same PC where classic Outlook is installed.
    2. Check for Office and Windows updates
      • Install the latest Microsoft 365 or Office updates.
      • Install the latest Windows updates.
      • The guidance notes that updates can correct problems by replacing out-of-date files and fixing vulnerabilities.
    3. If Outlook hangs at Processing, reset the Outlook Frame registry value
      • Warning: registry changes are risky. Back up the registry first.
      • Exit Outlook 2016.
      • Open Registry Editor:
        • Windows 10/8.1/8: press Windows key + R, type regedit.exe, select OK.
        • Windows 7: select Start, type regedit.exe, press Enter.
      • Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Office Explorer
      • In the details pane, select Frame.
      • Select Edit > Delete.
      • Confirm with Yes.
      • Exit Registry Editor and start Outlook.
      • If the issue repeats often, the documented alternative is to create a .reg file that resets the Frame value, or use Group Policy to delete that value.
    4. If Outlook shows “Something is wrong with one of your data files and Outlook needs to close”
      • Warning: registry changes are risky. Back up the registry first.
      • Open Run, type regedit, select OK.
      • Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\PST
      • Under PST, delete these values, then restart Outlook:
        • LastCorruptStore
        • PromptRepair
      • This issue was fixed in Monthly Channel Version 2005 Build 12827.20470 and higher. The documented update path is File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now.
    5. If Outlook does not start at all, use the startup repair guidance
      • The documented support path is the classic Outlook startup troubleshooter first.

The available guidance does not state that Microsoft Support remote access is required to clear duplicate Outlook registry files. It provides self-service troubleshooting and specific registry cleanup only for documented Outlook startup, processing, and data-file error scenarios.
