Windows 11 Pro lost activation after Razer BIOS update — digital licence not found

My Windows 11 Pro installation was previously activated successfully on this laptop. After I updated the BIOS on my Razer Blade 14 from BIOS version 1.06 to 1.08, Windows is now showing as not activated.

Windows 11 Pro is still installed, and the system is fully updated.

I have tried the following:

Activation Troubleshooter: it cannot find a device linked to my Microsoft account that can be used to activate this device.

I have tried both of my existing Microsoft accounts.

The Product Activation Portal rejects the Installation ID with: “We’re sorry, your Installation ID was unable to be validated.”

I generated the Installation ID using SLMGR /dti.

Windows reports the licence channel as Retail.

I also checked the firmware for an embedded Windows product key. The key is present, but attempting to install it gives error 0xC004F069, indicating that it does not match the installed Windows edition.

I do not want to reinstall Windows.

How can Microsoft verify the existing digital licence for this device and restore activation of Windows 11 Pro?

Thank you for that detailed information, I think contacting Razer support may be the only remaining option, if that is not successful, I think you may need to clean install the home version to activate Windows from the pre-installed licence on the motherboard.

    Dear Dave,

I managed to contact Microsoft in the end. In my Microsoft account there is the page devices. on that page it shows my Razer Blade 14 twice. same serial ID. The first one says: Windows Professional. the second says: Windows 10 Professional. Speccy shows: Operating System: Windows 11 Pro 64-bit. computer type: notebook. Installation date: 04/03/2025 22:46:20. Serial number: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. (for privacy reasons I have hidden the actual serial number). on the devices page there was a support option. It advised me to download Surface to get help. I selected Surface Pro. in the chat which opened they found out that I was in the wrong place. They would transfer me to Microsoft support for third parties (Razer). I have chatted a long time with a representative of Microsoft and she got remote access with Quick Assist. The end result was baffling in three ways:

    1. she wasn't able to solve it. She advised that I would have to buy a new Windows 11 Pro key for $199.99 (I am in the Netherlands). of course I knew that I could solve the problem by buying a new licence or product key. I spent all this time to avoid that. Having that kind of answer after a remove control session was baffling. Apparently the 2 ways of proof I provided that I had Windows 10 Pro (information inside my Microsoft account with devices) in the past and now Windows 11 Pro (information in Speccy as of right now) were not enough to let her give me a new valid key. I got the impression that she had to follow standard procedure and that this wasn't part of that. She did advise me to wait and see if Razer (whom I have also contacted and who will get back to me in 3 business days) will help me. They could either help me by finding the valid Windows 11 Pro product key or by buying a new one for me.
    2. Troubleshooting confirms now: We found a Windows 11 Home Digital licence for this device running Windows 11 Pro. I think she gave me that code. I don't think she got it from my system somewhere. For some reason though she would not give me a Windows 11 Pro key instead of windows 11 Home key.
    3. At first I think she claimed I had a Windows 10 Home version product key on my system. Later she put in a code which I hadn't seen myself and now it says in system: We can't activate Windows on this device because we can't connect to your organization's activation server. (I bought the laptop second hand and it was bought new by a company for a new employee but they didn't take the new employee so they sold the laptop to a person who buys up unused laptops and I bought it second hand from that person. not for €2400 new price but €1800 but without receipt. and that can cause problems like this activation problem.

I will wait to see if Razer can help me. I am glad I was able to contact support and I have a case number now with Razer for this. I will wait to see whether they can help me. Unfortunately it didn't seem possible to get a historic product key log overview somewhere and neither have I been able to find this update product key from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 11 Pro in places where I thought I could have stored it. Hopefully Razer has this in their log somewhere. I intend to update this question once I finalize with Razer. It may help somebody to see how this process developed. thank you for your help.

This comment was just for your information. I don't think you can help me further. your advice to contact Microsoft I followed up and although it was hard to contact them, I did manage eventually. thanks again Dave.

Their support is very hard to contact, I am not familiar with the methods to contact their support in all locations, if you are unable to contact their support with a local support phone number, open the Get Help app in Windows and repeatedly ask the bot in that app to 'speak to a person' you may eventually get a link to speak to their support via live chat support.

Thanks, Dave. I understand that Microsoft Support should be able to find the licence linked to my account and reactivate it.

The problem is that I have not been able to find a way to contact Microsoft Support directly for this activation issue. I have already gone through Microsoft's Contact Support / Get Help routes and the Activation Troubleshooter, but these ultimately sent me back to the Product Activation Portal. The portal rejected my Installation ID with “We’re sorry, your Installation ID was unable to be validated.”

I was only able to contact Razer directly, and they have now escalated the issue to their support specialists because the problem occurred after the BIOS update.

If you know of a specific way to reach a Microsoft activation specialist directly, I would appreciate the link or instructions.
