Hi everyone,
I am new to Azure and need help configuring Microsoft Entra ID users, groups, and IAM roles for a university assignment.
My Azure for Students subscription is associated with my university’s tenant, where I am a standard user without permission to make the required directory changes. My instructor suggested creating a personal tenant and associating my existing student subscription with it using “Change directory.”
Here is what I have tried:
With my university account, the “Create” button under Microsoft Entra ID → Manage tenants is grayed out.
I registered for Azure using a personal Microsoft account. I initially received an AADSTS16000 error referencing the “Microsoft Services” tenant, but I can now access a directory labeled “Default Directory.”
When creating a new tenant from the personal account, the form requires a subscription and resource group. The Subscription dropdown is empty, so I cannot continue.
My main question is: Can I use the existing personal Default Directory and associate my Azure for Students subscription with it, rather than creating another tenant?
If so, how do I confirm my administrator permissions and complete the directory change when the original subscription and target directory are accessed through different accounts?
If a new tenant is necessary, what is the supported approach for an Azure for Students user without upgrading to a paid subscription?
I would like to retain my existing student subscription and credits. Thank you for your help!
