Using New Outlook on Windows for academic communication and scheduling
In new Outlook, this usually happens because the rule is not a fully supported server-side rule.
A common cause is that the rule was migrated from classic Outlook as a client-side rule. New Outlook does not support client-side rules. When that happens, the rule may show This rule can't be edited or viewed, and it will not behave normally in new Outlook.
For a forwarding/redirect scenario, check these points:
- Open Settings in new Outlook.
- Go to Mail > Rules.
- Review the rule that is supposed to send the messages to the school mailbox.
- If the rule cannot be edited or viewed, recreate it in new Outlook instead of using the old one.
- If it can be edited, select Edit, confirm the conditions and action, then select Save.
Also note:
- If the rule uses conditions or actions that existed in classic Outlook but are not supported in new Outlook, it will not work the same way.
- New Outlook does not have the same classic Run Rules Now behavior for all rules. Based on the available guidance, rules in new Outlook can be run individually from Settings > Mail > Rules rather than using the classic bulk/manual run experience.
- Rules that depend on local or client-only behavior are the ones most likely to fail or have limited options in new Outlook.
If this worked last year, the likely difference is that the earlier rule was created or running in classic Outlook, while the current mailbox experience is now in new Outlook where client-side rules are not supported.
If the rule is intended only to forward incoming mail, recreate it as a simple new Outlook rule with only supported conditions/actions. Avoid anything that depends on on this machine only behavior or local folders.
