To change which account is an administrator on a Windows PC:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accounts > Other user.
- Under Other users, select the account to change.
- Next to Account options, select Change account type.
- Choose Administrator, then select OK.
Important: administrators have complete control over the PC, including changing settings, installing software, and accessing files. It is safer to keep the number of administrator accounts limited.
If the account that should become administrator does not exist yet, first add it:
- Open Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts.
- Select Add a Microsoft account or Add a work or school account.
- Follow the prompts.
If the goal is to replace the current administrator account entirely, a supported approach is:
- Create a new account.
- Change that new account type to Administrator.
- Sign out and sign in with the new administrator account.
- After confirming everything works, remove the old account if no longer needed.
Removing an old account can delete data associated with that profile, so back up important files first.
