"Home" and "End" buttons on my Keyboard stopped working on all pages in Chrome

Home button used to take the cursor to the top of the current page. End button used to take the cursor to the bottom of the page. This is no longer working. Page Up and Page Down work just fine. This is happening on both the physical keyboard for my desktop computer and the on-screen keyboard. It started at least a couple of months ago, so could an update have caused it? Or could it be a setting I have inadvertently changed without realizing the consequences? My home computer uses Windows 11. Chrome is the most current version.

    Hello kathy shepard,

It is possible that an update contributed to the change, but there is not enough information to confirm this. A more likely setting to check first is Chrome’s Caret Browsing, which can be switched on accidentally with the F7 key. Turning it off may restore the usual Home and End page-navigation behavior.

While viewing a webpage, press F7 once. If Chrome displays a Caret Browsing prompt, choose to turn it off. You can also open Chrome Settings > Accessibility and make sure Navigate pages with a text cursor is turned off.

If that does not help, open an Incognito window and test the Home and End keys there. If they work in Incognito, a Chrome extension may be intercepting those keys. Temporarily disable extensions, especially keyboard, scrolling, accessibility, or shortcut-related extensions, and test again.

You could also test the same webpage in Microsoft Edge. If Home and End work there, the issue is likely limited to the current Chrome profile. In that case, creating a new Chrome profile may provide a practical workaround without changing Windows settings.

Please let me know how it goes after trying these steps, and I'll be glad to continue looking into it with you.

Since Page Up and Page Down still work, but Home and End fail on both the physical keyboard and the on-screen keyboard, this points more to a Windows keyboard setting or app behavior change than to a hardware fault.

    Try these checks in order:

    1. Check Accessibility keyboard settings
      • Windows 11: go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
      • Review Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, and related keyboard options.
      • Turn them off temporarily and test Home and End again in Chrome.
      • These settings can change how keystrokes are handled, including ignored or altered repeated/special key behavior.
    2. Check for Windows updates
      • Go to Settings > Windows Update.
      • Install the latest updates, then restart.
      • Microsoft notes that special keys not functioning can mean the PC does not have the latest updates.
    3. Test whether the issue is text-cursor behavior vs page navigation
      • In Windows text editing, Home and End are commonly used to move to the beginning or end of the current line, while Ctrl + Home and Ctrl + End are used for the beginning or end of a document.
      • If the problem is only inside editable fields, test Ctrl + Home and Ctrl + End as well.
    4. Check whether Chrome is treating the keys differently than expected
      • The available context confirms Home and End are standard navigation/editing keys in Microsoft apps and Windows, but it does not document a Chrome-specific setting for restoring page-top/page-bottom behavior.
      • If the keys fail only in Chrome and not elsewhere, that suggests an app-specific behavior change rather than a Windows keyboard failure.
    5. If special keys still do not work correctly across apps
      • Recheck Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
      • If using Microsoft keyboard software, review customization in Mouse and Keyboard Center, because key settings and configurations can be changed there.

Based on the symptoms, the most relevant first actions are:

    • Turn off Sticky Keys / Filter Keys
    • Install Windows updates
    • Compare behavior in Chrome versus another app or text field
