Child payment decline on family account

Eveyr time I try to approve a purchase for my child, I am directed to "add money" to his account. When I do this, using the credit card that I have linked to the family account, the transaction is denied and I get an error code. It says to contact Microsoft Support. And then I go in loops trying to contact a live agent to help me resolve the problem. Incredibly frustrating.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble.

It can be frustrating trying to navigate the support system. However, as no one here would be able to help with your issue my suggestion would be to head back to https://support.microsoft.com and click on Contact Us then when following the instructions type I need more help to get to a person quicker. Once you've reached a person you can explain the issue and they should be able to help.

Use the Family organizer flow first, then check the payment method and account state that commonly block child purchase approvals.

    1. Sign in as the family organizer at family.microsoft.com.
    2. Open the child’s profile and select Add money or Manage spending > Add Money.
    3. On the Spending page, use the payment method listed under Child’s payment methods. If needed, select How to add a card or Add a new payment method and re-enter the card details.
    4. If the card is declined, verify these common causes:
      • The card details, name, address, and CVV exactly match the card.
      • The card is active and not blocked by the bank.
      • The card is valid for the country/region on the account.
      • The bank is not requiring an extra identity verification step.
    5. Also check these account conditions that can block purchases:
      • The payment method is up to date on the Payment options page.
      • There are no overdue subscription payments on the Services page.
      • The Microsoft account is not temporarily suspended.
    6. If PayPal is being used anywhere in the payment flow, make sure it has a confirmed bank account or credit card as its funding source.
    7. If the add-money transaction still fails and the error tells support contact is required, use Microsoft Support from the support entry point and select Contact Support after entering the problem.

For child accounts, the purchase approval flow can require money to be added first, and the child’s payment methods are managed from the child’s Spending page rather than a separate payment page.
