For OneNote on Windows, this sharing problem is commonly fixed based on where the notebook was created and stored.

If the error appears when sharing a notebook that is already on OneDrive, the usual cause is that the notebook was created by using File > New > Browse to a OneDrive location instead of creating it directly with the OneDrive option.

Use the matching fix below:

1. If the notebook has not been created yet
   • In OneNote 2016 for Windows, select File > New > OneDrive.
   • Create the notebook there.
   • Then share it from File > Share.
2. If the notebook already exists
   • Open the notebook in OneNote 2016 for Windows.
