Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
If this is Outlook.com, there may not be an issue with the account itself. A common cause is that the message never reached the mailbox, or it was filtered out before it became visible.
Check these items in Outlook.com:
- Other tab: Make sure the message did not land under Other.
- Junk Email: Check both Junk Email settings and the Junk Email folder. If a message is there, mark it as not junk.
- Sort and filters: Make sure the message list is sorted by Filter > Sort > Date so messages are easier to find.
- Forwarding: Verify email forwarding is not enabled.
- Rules: Check whether a rule is moving or deleting messages.
- Mailbox/cloud storage: If Microsoft cloud storage is full, Outlook.com cannot send or receive email, and messages sent while storage was full are bounced back to the sender and are unrecoverable.
If the message is still missing after those checks, ask the sender whether they received a non-delivery report or rejection message. In some cases, Microsoft blocks messages before they reach the mailbox because the sender’s domain or sending IP fails authentication or is blocked. In that case, the sender must correct their email authentication settings or follow Microsoft’s sender remediation process.
If the missing message is a Microsoft verification email, valid messages come from @accountprotection.microsoft.com and may also appear in Junk Email.
