microsoft support is a sorry excuse of a support system, cyclical links and zero way to talk to a person. reinstalled windows 10 because of a hardware upgrade, one day later i have the activate windows watermark. the key i used previously doesnt work, and my installation id is no longer valid. i have had w10 pro for years now, and settings says i have w10 home valid and not pro. so i have to reinstall windows again because microsoft forgot i have windows 10 pro?

    Hello, Harrison Matthew.

It all depends on how exactly the Windows 10 license was purchased.:

    1. OEM (pre-installed on the PC), or received in 2015-16 as part of the free upgrade promotion from genuine 7/8/8.1, or an upgrade from the Home Edition to the Professional edition was purchased in the MicrosoftStore.

In this case, the license is permanently linked to the PC and becomes invalid in case of replacement of the motherboard. Accordingly, the activation stops.

    1. Purchased as a full standalone (BOX or ESD) version. In this case, the user has the right to transfer the license to another PC (replacing the motherboard is considered a new device).

Specify how you obtained the Windows 10 license (and which edition), and also post a screenshot of the command window here:

    slmgr.vbs /dlv

The information you provide will help determine further actions to resolve the problem.
