Use OneNote as a workspace where learners create, organize, and transform ideas rather than only read notes.
A practical activity design:
- Set up a shared notebook structure
Create pages for:
- a prompt or problem
- idea generation
- analysis
- application to a new context
- reflection
- Start with idea generation Ask learners to brainstorm possible explanations, solutions, or examples on a page. If Copilot in OneNote is available, learners can use Give me ideas to break mental blocks and generate starting points, then copy useful output into their notes.
- Move from collection to construction
After brainstorming, have learners:
- group related ideas
- identify patterns or themes
- rewrite notes for clarity
- create task lists or summaries of what the group now understands
- Require transfer to a new context
Add a second prompt that changes the setting. For example:
- apply a science concept to a real-world community problem
- apply a historical lesson to a modern scenario
- apply a design idea to a different audience
- Use collaboration intentionally
In a Class Notebook, use collaborative spaces for group knowledge building and private spaces for individual synthesis. A strong pattern is:
- group page for shared brainstorming
- individual page for each learner’s final application
- Add reflection and self-assessment Insert a Reflect check-in on the page so learners evaluate their effort, motivation, progress, or need for help. This helps learners monitor how their thinking changed during the activity.
- End with a product that shows new understanding
Ask learners to produce one of these in OneNote:
- a plan
- a summary of their new model or explanation
- a comparison between original and new context
- a proposal, outline, or action list
A simple activity example:
- Page 1: Present a problem or case.
- Page 2: Learners brainstorm ideas individually or in groups.
- Page 3: Learners organize and summarize the strongest ideas.
- Page 4: Learners apply those ideas to a different scenario.
- Page 5: Learners complete a Reflect check-in and write what changed in their thinking.
This design supports knowledge construction because learners do more than receive information: they generate ideas, analyze them, reorganize them, transfer them to a new context, and reflect on the result.
