Common causes are a blocked file, broken picture links, unsupported editing locations, missing or incompatible graphics filters, or an image format that PowerPoint is not treating as a standard picture.

    Try these fixes in order:

    1. Update Office Install the latest Office updates.
    2. Save the presentation to a different local folder In PowerPoint, go to File > Save As, save the file to a different location on the PC, close PowerPoint, then reopen the file and check whether the pictures appear.
    3. Make sure the file is not blocked by Windows
      • Open File Explorer.
      • Find the presentation file.
      • Right-click it and select Properties.
      • If Unblock appears near the bottom, select Unblock > Apply > OK.
      • Open the presentation again.
    4. Check whether the pictures are linked instead of embedded If the presentation was copied through email, a network share, USB storage, or another service, linked pictures may no longer be found. Put the picture files in the same folder as the presentation, or reinsert them as embedded pictures.
    5. Avoid editing from unsupported locations A common cause of red X or “The picture can’t be displayed” is editing the presentation directly from a USB/flash drive or an unsupported cloud service. Edit the file from the local hard drive or OneDrive instead.
    6. Reinsert the images as standard picture formats If the image is a vector graphic or embedded object, PowerPoint may not handle it as a normal picture. Replace it with a .png, .jpeg/.jpg, .tiff, .bmp, or .gif version.
    7. If images were pasted in, try inserting saved image files instead Save the screenshots or pictures as PNG or JPG, then insert those files into PowerPoint instead of relying on copy/paste.
    8. If PowerPoint crashes when using media On some PCs, older Intel 510, 520, or 620 graphics drivers can cause PowerPoint to crash when files contain images or video. Update the Intel graphics driver to the latest version.

If the presentation still will not display pictures, create a new blank presentation and import the slides into it, then save that new file locally.

    Hi, Margaret Cannon

If the pictures are missing in every presentation, the problem is more likely related to PowerPoint itself, an add-in, or image rendering settings. If only online or stock pictures are affected, PowerPoint’s privacy settings may be preventing that content from loading.

Besides the solutions provided by the Q&A Assist, here are some suggestions you can try:

Start PowerPoint in Safe Mode. Press Windows key + R, enter powerpnt /safe, and press Enter. Open the presentation again. If the pictures appear, select File > Options > Add-ins, choose COM Add-ins, select Go, and temporarily disable the add-ins.

Repair Office. Close Office, open Control Panel > Programs and Features, select Microsoft 365 or Office, choose Change, and run Online Repair.

If online or stock images are missing, open File > Options > General > Privacy Settings and enable connected experiences that download online content.

Open the presentation in PowerPoint for the web. If the pictures display there, the file is likely intact and the issue is limited to the desktop installation.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.
