Husband is using my laptop (primary is me, I pay the family subscription) but when he is logged in and attempting to use Word, it tells him it is unregistered. I use Word every day on this laptop. His account is part of the family subscription. Why is this happening and more importantly HOW DO I FIX IT???

Did you share the subscription with your husband, as discussed in the support article at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accounts-billing/subscriptions/share-your-microsoft-365-subscription?

I suspect that the problem might be that you are using the same computer, if that is indeed what you are doing. The Office installation attempts to use the wrong account for activation, when your husband signs in.

The idea with sharing is that you use not only different accounts but also different computers, I believe.

This usually happens because Word on that laptop is still activated with the subscription owner’s account, or the wrong Microsoft account is being used in Office. Being added to Microsoft 365 Family does not automatically switch the license inside the desktop apps.

Try this on the laptop while signed in as the husband:

    1. Verify that the shared benefit is active.
      • Go to Services & subscriptions.
      • Sign in with the husband’s Microsoft account.
      • Confirm that Microsoft 365 Family appears as shared with him.
    2. Sign out of Office and sign back in with the correct account.
      • Open Word.
      • Go to File > Account.
      • Sign out of every account shown under Office.
      • Close all Office apps.
      • Reopen Word and sign in with the husband’s Microsoft account that shows the Family benefit.
    3. If Word still shows unlicensed, check for account mismatch.
      • In Office, make sure the account signed in is the same one that accepted the Family invitation.
      • If multiple personal accounts exist, try the one that shows the subscription on Services & subscriptions.
    4. Check for multiple Office installations.
      • In Windows, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Search for office.
      • If more than one Office version is installed, uninstall the version not being used.
      • Restart the laptop, then open Word and sign in again.
    5. If subscription features still are not available, reinstall Microsoft 365.
      • First confirm the subscription is active.
      • Then completely uninstall Office with the uninstall support tool and reinstall Microsoft 365.

    What to expect:

    • If the husband was removed from sharing or the shared benefit is not active, desktop Office apps will lose full functionality.
    • In reduced functionality mode, documents can still be opened and printed, but not edited or newly created.
