A significant hardware change such as a motherboard replacement can break the digital license match for Windows 11, which causes error 0xC004F211 and can prevent previous devices from appearing in the Activation troubleshooter.
Use this path:
- Check activation status in Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- If Troubleshoot is available, run it from Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot.
- Windows activation requires an internet connection.
- The troubleshooter is available only when Windows is not activated.
- Administrative sign-in is required.
- If hardware was changed recently, use the reactivation flow for hardware changes. A Windows 11 digital license is associated with the device, and after a motherboard change Windows may no longer find a matching license.
- If the troubleshooter does not find the previous device, verify that the Windows license had been linked to the Microsoft account before the hardware change. That link is what enables reactivation after significant hardware changes.
- Confirm that the installed edition matches the license. In Settings > System > Activation, check whether the device is running Windows 11 Pro or Windows 11 Home. If the edition does not match the license, Windows will not activate.
- If a valid 25-character product key is available, enter it in Start > Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.
- If Windows still does not activate after Troubleshooter and product key entry, use the activation error guidance or contact Microsoft support.
Supported outcomes from the documentation:
- Motherboard replaced: Windows may stop activating because the digital license is tied to the device hardware.
- Previous device not shown in troubleshooter: reactivation depends on the Microsoft account being associated with the digital license before the hardware change.
- Edition mismatch: a Home license will not activate Pro, and vice versa.
- OEM motherboard replacement by the original manufacturer: the PC should reactivate automatically; if not, use the COA/product key if one was provided.
