This is a known issue due to a recent update. See article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/servicing/office/hotfix/excel/5002914

Please type cmd in the search on the taskbar. Don't press enter key yet. Instead, choose "run as administrator" to launch Command Prompt. Run the command accordingly to roll your Office back to the last stable version.

Then run this command (for Office 2016 retail MSI installer)

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE16\Oarpmany.exe" /removereleaseinpatch "{90160000-0012-0000-1000-0000000FF1CE}" "{27882596-A8ED-4382-9C71-6CD2DD19F732}" "1033" "0"

For Office 2016 Retail Click-to-Run, use this instead

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeC2RClient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.19127.20264

    Hi @Amitava Pradhan

Please note that Microsoft Office 2016 reached End of Support on October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft no longer provides security updates, bug fixes, technical support, or time zone updates for this product.

Based on the information you provided, I understand that after installing KB5002914 for Excel 2016, copy and paste operations using either the keyboard or mouse are no longer working, and AutoFill functionality for numbers and formulas has also stopped functioning correctly.

After doing some research, I found that several other users have reported very similar symptoms after installing KB5002914, so it does not appear that you're the only one affected. There are currently community discussions where users experiencing the same issue have shared temporary workarounds and troubleshooting steps.

    Ref: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5998543/issue-with-excel-2016-copy-and-paste-cells?comment=question&translated=false&page=1#answers

In the meantime, while waiting for an official update or resolution from Microsoft, you may want to review the following Microsoft article and consider rolling back to a previous Office build if the issue is significantly impacting your work:

Description of the security update for Excel 2016: September 08, 2026 (KB5002914)

Based on the reports from other affected users, reverting to the version prior to KB5002914 has helped restore normal copy/paste and AutoFill behavior in some environments. However, because rolling back an update can have security implications, it's generally recommended to coordinate with your IT administrator before proceeding.

Could you also confirm whether your Office installation is MSI-based or Click-to-Run? The rollback process is different for each installation type.

Please keep me updated with your findings.

This issue is reported after update KB5002914 for Excel 2016. A documented resolution from the related support discussion is to uninstall KB5002914 and restart Windows. If copy/paste still does not work after removing that update, reinstall Office.

Because the problem also affects fill behavior for numeric values and formulas, test in this order:

    1. Uninstall KB5002914
      • Open Settings or Control Panel for installed updates.
      • Remove KB5002914.
      • Restart the PC.
    2. Test Excel again
      • Try Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V in a new blank workbook.
      • Try dragging or filling numeric and formula cells.
    3. If the issue remains, reinstall Office
      • The accepted resolution in the related case states that some systems required an Office reinstall to restore copy/paste functionality.
    4. If Paste Special is available, use it as a temporary workaround
      • In similar cases, Paste Special > Values or Paste Special > Formulas and Number Formats continued to work while normal paste failed.

If Paste Special is also missing or unreliable, verify this Excel setting:

    • Go to File > Options > Advanced.
    • Under Cut, copy and paste, make sure Show Paste Options button when content is pasted is checked.

If needed, also test Excel in Safe Mode to rule out add-in conflicts:

    • Hold CTRL while starting Excel, then confirm Safe Mode.
    • If paste works there, disable add-ins one at a time and leave the conflicting add-in disabled.
