How do I change the account I setup a new laptop with? Used the wrong microsoft account and want to switch it can u help?

Yes. The supported way is to switch the Windows sign-in from the current Microsoft account to a local account, then connect the same Windows profile to the correct Microsoft account.

Steps in Windows 11:

Open Settings.
Go to Accounts > Your info.
Select Sign in with a local account instead.
- This option appears only if the PC is currently using a Microsoft account.
Follow the prompts to finish switching to a local account.
Sign out and sign back in with that local account.
Return to Settings > Accounts > Your info.
Select Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.
Sign in with the correct Microsoft account and complete the prompts.

This changes the account connected to the existing Windows profile rather than requiring a full reset.

If the wrong email is only the sign-in name for the Microsoft account, another option is to add or change aliases for that Microsoft account from Edit account info.

If the issue is that the old email address belongs to an old Microsoft account, that old address cannot be reused to create a new Microsoft account.

Can you currently sign into your Windows at all?

If so, try this first, there's a chance you may not be able to do it, but worth a shot.

Go to Settings > Accounts > Your info

Click on Sign in with local user instead. follow the steps and finish the rest.

(If you don't see the "sign in with a local account instead option, click on "Stop signing into Microsoft apps automatically" first, then relaunch this page. )

Restart the computer (Do Not skip)

Go to Settings > Accounts > Your info

Click on Sign in with Microsoft account instead. follow the steps and finish the rest. Please use the correct Microsoft account this time if you have already created a correct one.

Otherwise, you would have to do it this way:

Type netplwiz in the search on the taskbar and hit enter. When launched, click on "Add". Sign into the correct Microsoft account.
When the above user is created, back to the main netplwiz page, double click on this new user, go to the Group Membership tab, make it administrator. Save the change.
Restart the computer. Sign into the new user you created in Step 1.
If you have data at the old username folder, go to C:\users\old username folder, find them and copy them into C:\users\new username folder.
Type sysdm.cpl in the search on the taskbar and hit enter, go to Advanced tab, click on the "Settings" button at the User Profile section. Then delete the old user profile.
Launch netplwiz again, delete the old user from there.
