To send an Excel workbook directly from Excel as an email attachment, Outlook must be installed and set as the default email app.
For a locally saved workbook, use this path in Excel:
- Open the workbook.
- Select File > Share.
- Select Attach a copy instead.
- Choose the workbook file or PDF option.
- Enter recipients and select Send.
Important limitation: with New Outlook for Windows, sending directly from Excel can fail because this integration depends on MAPI support used by classic Outlook. In that case, these are the supported workarounds:
- Upload the file to OneDrive and share the link.
- Save the file locally, then open Outlook and attach the file manually.
- Use Classic Outlook instead of New Outlook.
If the goal is to avoid cloud sharing entirely, the practical option is to keep the workbook on the desktop and attach it manually in Outlook, or use Classic Outlook so Excel can hand off the local file directly.
