Deleted default tenant — still receiving invoices, cannot access billing account or open a support ticket

I need help from a Microsoft engineer with an orphaned tenant / billing owner lockout. I cannot resolve this through normal channels and I am asking for an internal support case to be created on my behalf.

Situation:

  • I deleted my Microsoft/Azure account. I did not knowingly delete the directory (Entra tenant) itself, but I am now locked out of it, so it appears the tenant was left without any valid user.
  • I continue to receive invoices by email for this billing account.
  • I can no longer sign in to the Azure portal with the original account. Sign-in fails with a "The account needs to be added as an external user in the tenant first. Please use a different account." error.
  • I created a new account on the same email address. It lands in a new, unrelated tenant and has no access to the original billing account, so the same error occurs.
  • I cannot open a support request in the Azure portal, because ticket creation requires Sign-in that fails.
  • I have called the published support number. It is an automated system that only redirects to the support website, which in turn requires a portal sign-in. There is no path to a human from that line.

What I am asking for:

  1. Confirmation of the current state of the subscription and billing account associated with the invoices.
  2. Cancellation of any remaining active subscription, and closure of the billing account, so that no further invoices are generated.
  3. Deletion of all and every service, account etc connecting to the current email

Details I can provide (available in the invoice PDF, and which I will share privately on request):

  • Invoice number
  • Tenant ID
  • Billing account / billing profile ID
  • Account email address
  • Approximate date the tenant was deleted

Thank you.

    Hi @A Y

Thank you for reaching out to the Q&A forum.

This sounds like a tenant/billing lockout rather than an issue that can be resolved by creating another Microsoft account. The new account will normally belong to a different tenant, so it won't automatically regain access to the original billing account.

In a similar tenant-lockout case, Microsoft confirmed that the issue had to be handled through a support ticket and was escalated to the Data Protection team for ownership verification and tenant access recovery.

Since you are still receiving invoices, I would recommend treating this primarily as a billing/tenant access issue:

Keep the invoice number, billing account/profile ID, subscription ID (if shown), and original tenant ID available.

Do not create additional tenants/accounts expecting them to inherit the old billing relationship.

If you can create a support request from any account that currently has access to Azure, select Billing and clearly explain that the original tenant is inaccessible and that invoices are still being generated.

In the description, explicitly state that you are requesting verification of the orphaned tenant/billing account and cancellation of any active subscription or recurring charges associated with it.

Microsoft's billing documentation also makes an important distinction: locking or deleting a billing account does not by itself cancel existing subscriptions; active subscriptions need to be cancelled separately.

If you cannot create a support request at all because you have no access to the affected tenant, this is not something Microsoft Q&A can verify or change from the community side. The billing/support team will need to verify ownership using the information from your invoices and determine the current state of the subscription and billing account.

I would also avoid posting the invoice, tenant ID, billing profile ID, or payment information publicly. Provide those details only through Microsoft's official support process.

    I hope this helps.
