When I hit "news" to compose and email, no pop-up box in which to write the new email opens up. Additionally, the same things happens when I hit the "reply" button from an email.

Replies and new messages may open in the reading pane ("in line") by default.
Make sure that "Open replies and forwards in a new window" is selected at File > Options > Mail.
