MS Teams Unmutes itself

This was an Isolated incident that I am unable to replicate but during class, I'm sure my teams were muted, I also muted my mic using MSI laptop's Fn+F5 which mutes the mic for the whole laptop, but after I joined a discord call and unmuted using Fn+F5 my teams unmuted, it is still showing muted yet it picks up audio from my microphhone, I was confused when my professor asked everyone to make sure their mics are off, because it showed muted in the UI and I heard noone else speak. I only confirmed it was the case when I spoke again.

Good day Anon

Thank you for the additional details.

I tested the same behavior on an MSI Katana GF66 laptop and found that when you press Fn + F5 to re-enable the microphone for Discord, the laptop makes the microphone available again to all applications that are already using it, including Teams desktop app. As a result, Teams can start receiving audio once the device microphone is turned back on.

Note: The third-party app mentioned here isn't managed, developed, or verified by Microsoft. I shared it based on your situation; however, please be aware that I cannot guarantee the quality, safety, or suitability of the app, nor any content or software it may contain.

Because Fn + F5 controls the microphone at the device level, it isn't an application specific mute button. If Teams and another calling app are open at the same time, changing the microphone state with Fn + F5 can affect both applications.

For future meetings, I recommend using the microphone button within each app instead of Fn + F5 to mute or unmute your microphone.

Regarding the Teams UI not reflecting the microphone status correctly, Microsoft states that third-party applications (example: Discord, Zoom, Google meeting, e.g) can interfere with Teams audio controls and create synchronization issues between the device and Teams. In this situation, the microphone state on the device can be different from the mute status shown in the Teams interface.

You can refer to the documentation here: Known issues when you use Teams certified peripherals - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn

As a workaround, you can join the meeting using Teams on the web. During my testing, the Teams desktop app responded to microphone changes made with Fn + F5, while Teams on the web remained unaffected. Even when using Teams on the web, I still recommend checking the microphone status and toggling Unmute and Mute once to confirm the correct state before speaking. Also, avoid using the Fn + F5 microphone shortcut.

Additionally, please also make sure that Windows, your web browser and the Teams app are updated to the latest version.

I hope this workaround helps reduce some of the inconvenience and I appreciate your understanding and patience. If you have any questions or need further support, please don’t hesitate to reach out at any time.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
