A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data
If the Copy and Paste issue began after installing the September 8, 2026 security update for Excel 2016 (KB5002914) then it appears to match a known issue documented in the official support article.
Based on the description in the official support article, the behavior you are experiencing appears to match the documented issue. When it occurs, the copied cells remain selected, but the content is not pasted into the destination and no error message is displayed. The issue is listed as affecting Excel 2024, Excel 2021, Excel 2019, and Excel 2016.
The issue is currently under investigation, and the article will be updated as more information becomes available: Description of the security update for Excel 2016: September 08, 2026 (KB5002914)

For the time being, you may consider the following options:
1/ If permitted by your organization or IT administrator, consider temporarily rolling back or uninstalling the affected update. Please keep in mind that this is a security update, so removing it may expose the computer to vulnerabilities addressed by the update.
You can follow the steps outlined here: Go back to the previous version of Windows
2/ Submit a report through Excel > Help > Feedback > Report a Problem.
Please include the full Excel version and build number, the date the issue started, and whether it appeared immediately after an update.
In addition to submitting feedback through Excel, you may also report the issue through the Feedback Hub app in Windows.
- Press Windows key + F, or search for Feedback Hub in the Start menu.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Click Report a Problem
- Add screenshots if possible.
For more details, please refer to: Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app
You may also search for an existing report describing the same issue and upvote it or add your experience instead of creating a duplicate report. Please note that the Feedback Hub is intended for reporting product issues and does not provide immediate technical support
For now, I recommend monitoring the relevant support article for the latest information. If Microsoft releases a fix or provides additional instructions, please follow the guidance in the article and install the recommended update when it becomes available.
Please note that I am a fellow forum user and am not directly involved in Microsoft’s investigation or product development process. However, submitting feedback can help the appropriate product team better understand the scope and impact of the issue.
I will continue monitoring the article and update this thread if any new guidance or resolution is published.
