Will not even open in safe mode - I don't like the 'new' outlook, please help!

I've tried both repair types amd a complete new install, same problem. My PC will not revert back to the restore point, with the helpful message 'there has been an error'.

Since Classic Outlook will not open even in Safe Mode and both Quick Repair, Online Repair, and reinstall have already been tried, use this order:

    1. Update Office from another Office app
      • Open Word.
      • Go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
      • This is the recommended step for the known crash issue where Outlook opens in Safe Mode or fails after affected builds.
    2. Check whether the March 12, 2026 crash issue matches the behavior
      • Microsoft documented a Classic Outlook issue where Outlook crashes and opens in Safe Mode.
      • If Office is not on a fixed build yet, updating Office is the primary fix.
    3. Run the navigation pane reset
      • Close Outlook.
      • Press Windows key + R.
      • Type: Outlook.exe /resetnavpane
      • Select OK.
      • This removes local navigation pane customizations that can block Outlook startup.
    4. If Outlook still will not open, create the FORMS2 folder workaround
      • Close Outlook and other Office apps.
      • Select Start > Run.
      • Enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft
      • Select OK.
      • In File Explorer, select New > Folder.
      • Name it FORMS2.
      • This is a documented workaround for a Classic Outlook crash when opening or starting a new email.
    5. If Outlook opens only in Safe Mode later, disable add-ins one by one
      • In Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
      • At the bottom, confirm Manage = COM Add-ins and select Go.
      • Clear all selected add-ins and select OK.
      • Restart Outlook normally.
      • If Outlook opens, re-enable add-ins one at a time to identify the faulty one.
      • Do not choose Remove during this test; disable only.
    6. If the issue started after the Office update and remains after updating again, run Online Repair once more as a workaround path
      • Microsoft lists Online Repair of Office as a workaround for the 2026 crash issue.
    7. If none of the above works, use support escalation
      • The available guidance for similar cases recommends contacting Microsoft Support for specialized assistance when reinstalling and standard troubleshooting do not resolve Classic Outlook startup failures.

    Notes:

    • Safe Mode, /resetnavpane, and COM add-in troubleshooting apply to Classic Outlook, not new Outlook.
    • Since Safe Mode already fails, add-ins are less likely to be the immediate cause unless Outlook later starts in Safe Mode after another fix.
    • The restore point failure is not covered by the available Outlook guidance, so no supported steps are available for that part.
