I can't edit cells in Excel

I have gone to my preferences. "Edit Directly In Cells" is checked.

In earlier versions of Excel I could select a cell and edit it. Now there is no cursor. I can't select any of the contents of a cell. It is completely worthless.

I am using Microsoft Excel for the Mac version Version 16.112 (26081010). My Mac OS is 14.4 (23E214)

This is extremely frustrating.

    I noticed that you are running Excel 16.112 (Build 26081010). That was released on August 11, 2026. As of September 10, Microsoft lists 16.112.4 (Build 26090911) as the latest release, including additional Excel quality and performance fixes.

    I suggest trying these steps first:

    1. In Excel, go to Help > Check for Updates.
    2. Install all available Microsoft 365 updates until Excel shows 16.112.4 or later.
    3. Completely quit Excel with Command + Q, restart the Mac, and test again in a new blank workbook.

    If updating does not resolve it, could you please confirm two things?

    • Can you edit the cell contents from the formula bar, or is there no cursor there either?
    • Does the same issue occur in a completely new blank workbook?

    Further to the reply from Jeronimo your installation of Sonoma is seriously behind on updates. Version 14.8.9 is the current release.

    Also, have a look at the Review tab to confirm that Protect Sheet isn't enabled.
