A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
For Excel on Mac, these are the supported checks and workarounds for this symptom:
- Try entering Edit mode explicitly:
- Double-click the cell.
- Or select the cell and press F2.
- Or select the cell, then click in the formula bar.
- Confirm the setting is enabled:
- Go to Excel > Preferences or File > Options > Advanced equivalent settings area.
- Make sure Edit directly in cells / Allow editing directly in cells is enabled.
- If a control or object is covering the cell, edit through the formula bar instead:
- Make sure the formula bar is visible.
- Enter the cell reference in the Name box.
- Edit the cell contents in the formula bar.
- Check whether the worksheet is protected:
- A protected worksheet can prevent selecting or editing cells.
- If the file is protected and the password is available, go to the Review tab and select Unprotect Sheet or Unprotect Workbook.
- If this is a protected workbook with restricted editable ranges, Excel for Mac has a known limitation:
- If the workbook uses permissions that let only certain users edit specific ranges, Excel for Mac cannot edit those cells.
- The workaround is to edit the file in Excel on a domain-joined Windows device, or unprotect the worksheet/workbook if permitted.
- If the issue affects all workbooks, including new ones, restart the Mac and test again. A reported case with the same symptom on Mac was resolved after restart.
- If Excel still will not allow typing in any workbook on Mac, check macOS file access permissions:
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files and Folders.
- Find Microsoft Excel.
- Turn on access for available locations such as Documents, Desktop, and Downloads.
- If already enabled, toggle one off and back on, then restart the Mac.
- If the problem started after activation or update issues, remove old Office license files on the Mac and reactivate Excel. This was the accepted resolution in a similar Mac Excel case.
