For outdoor use on an HP PC, use these Windows settings first:
- Increase brightness:
- Select Action Center on the right side of the taskbar and move the Brightness slider up.
- In Windows 11 or Windows 10, also check Settings > System > Display.
- Turn on automatic brightness if supported:
- Go to Settings > System > Display.
- Under Brightness and color, enable Change brightness automatically when lighting changes if that option appears.
- Improve readability at night or reduce color strain when needed:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Display > Night light.
- Adjust the Strength slider or schedule it if needed.
- If the Night light toggle is grayed out, update the display driver.
- Calibrate color:
- Search for calibrate display color in Settings and follow the directions.
- Turn on automatic color management if available:
- Go to Settings > System > Display > Color profile.
- Select the display and enable Automatically manage color for apps.
- If brightness controls are missing or do not work, update the display driver:
- Type Device Manager in the taskbar search box and open it.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the display adapter and select Update driver.
- On HP laptops, also check the HP utility app for display features such as adaptive brightness, ambient light sensor, presence detection, or power-saving display settings.
- If the screen dims or shuts off only in direct sunlight, test the laptop in shade. Some laptops can dim or turn off the display when the panel or system gets too hot.
Note: if using an external monitor, brightness usually must be changed with the monitor’s own buttons rather than in Windows.
