Hi MS Partner,
I understand how frustrating it must be to spend several hours downloading an update, only for the installation to fail and roll back to the previous build.
To help narrow this down, could you please provide the following details?
- The exact Surface model shown under Settings > System > About
- The Insider channel shown under Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program
- Any error code listed under Settings > Windows Update > Update history
- The available free space on the Windows drive
In the meantime, please try the following:
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices and make sure the Surface is connected to power.
- Temporarily disconnect any VPN and third-party antivirus software.
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Restart the device and check for updates again.
Please also check the known issues for the build being offered, as an update failure may be related to a documented compatibility issue. If the update continues to roll back, back up your important files before attempting any recovery or ISO-based installation. Microsoft’s documented recovery options for an Insider build that cannot update may eventually require reinstalling Windows.
For reference:
Once you share the error code and Insider channel, I can better determine the appropriate next step. Thank you so much for your understanding.
