Is there any fix to Microsoft Update KB5002914?

am still stuck can one elaborate Tomas comand, i reinstalled it but it doesn't work

On PC1 I uninstalled office 2016 and installed office 2019 I purchased long ago , issue remains and no longer able to remove kb5002914 because office 2016 is no longer installed. The temp fix I found is do a full update of win 11 and office 2019 on another computer (let's call it PC2), then copy the excel.exe for office 2019 from PC2 and replace the excel.exe in PC1 that has the issue. It works, mine is only a home computer I use for office stuff, but to me this is a temp fix only while waiting for the next office update .

If you have upgraded Windows 11 from Window 10, and do not see the KB500214 then the update catalog may be missing, corrupted or not displaying the entry, however you may still be able to use Tomas' solution.

Here is how to do it:

• Close Excel if it is open.
•  Open a command prompt as administrator: (In the search box type in “CMD” and then on the right click on “run as administrator”).
• You will see a window with a black background and a white text prompt.
• Highlight the following line and press CTRL-C to copy it, then paste it into the command prompt window by clicking once in the window and hitting CTRL-V to paste. You should see the same thing appear in white text on the black background.

 msiexec.exe /package "{90160000-0012-0000-1000-0000000FF1CE}" /uninstall "{27882596-A8ED-4382-9C71-6CD2DD19F732}" /qn /norestart

• Once you see the pasted line, hit ENTER.
• The system should quickly come back to the prompt.
•  Type “exit” and hit ENTER.

Note: If Windows 11 is up to date, you may not see the option to uninstall Office patches. This seems to have been removed by Microsoft! Tomas' solution gets around that, assuming the patch actually is installed.

Note: I found that the above did not work on one machine that had Office 2016 Pro installed, but it worked fine on over two dozen computers that had Office 2016 installed.

I was able to use a different program to uninstall the KB update on the Office 2016 Pro machine, and that also solved the issue on that computer.

Replaced EXCEL.EXE with the working Excel from different client.

For now uninstalling update and stoping updates from installing again looks like only solution. Thats until microsoft release fix. If they release it.

In my case Win11, after obtaining the GUID for the Excel component, I used the following PowerShell command: & "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE16\Oarpmany.exe" /removereleaseinpatch "{90160000-0016-0410-1000-0000000FF1CE}" "{27882596-A8ED-4382-9C71-6CD2DD19F732}" "1040" "0" This allowed the KB to be uninstalled, but the change isn't persistent; it reinstalls upon reboot. I'm hoping for a fix from Microsoft.

You will have to block that update.
You can find many ways to do it via Google.

My issue with the KB5002914 update was with the Fill Series of cells option...it just wouldn't work. I tried clearing all Excel settings and even a new user account and same issue. Tomas fix did not work, but once I had to followed Antonino's direction, since I have Office 2016 Pro, that fixed the issue. Not looking forward to have to keep uninstalling this, but at least I can function in Excel. Microsoft...get it together.

Yes, just uninstalling the update is not a full solution, since windows will just try to install the update again. One needs to also then prevent the update from reinstalling again.

My suggestion would be to use the old [possibly deprecated] Microsoft "show/hide updates" tool. To then "hide" the KB5002914 update so it doesn't reinstall again once the update has been uninstalled.

Don't know if anyone has a link to an official copy of the old tool? I know at some point Microsoft "deprecated" and stopped supporting it, but the tool still works great under win10/win11 for preventing unwanted updates from reinstalling after uninstalling them.

One should, I believe locally download the file and then, after the errant update has been uninstalled, immediately run it in order to "hide" the KB5002914 update so it stops trying to re-download it, until Microsoft issues a patch to officially fix the issue. Then, presumably one can either download whatever new version of the fix, or go back to the show/hide tool and unhide the update?

Hope that helps folks with the latter half of the "uninstall" fix, by also "hiding" the update so it doesn't come back. Fun old hack.

Unfortunately, this actually doesn't appear to work on the machine I'm trying it on in our office.

So, any other brilliant solutions for digging this tick out on machines where it doesn't "see" the installed update, when it's clearly installed and causing problems?

Is there some other registry key or identifier or whatever that should be being used? Since that doesn't seem to be getting it done...

Once it's uninstalled, you should use the old deprecated/unsupported (but still functional) windows show/hide updates utility to "hide" KB5002914:

Download locally, then, after the update has been uninstalled, run the utility, click next, let it search for updates to "hide," and hide KB5002914. Let it apply the fix. Restart if necessary. Hopefully that should keep the update from being reinstalled. Fun old hack to get windows to stop reinstalling bad patches automatically as soon as they're uninstalled. ;)

I am instead trying (from modified Google suggestion adding the proper '(x86)' back to the path to the file, which initially caused an error in finding the 0arpmany executable):

Dang, after hitting uninstall, it pops up an unknown error message:

After some back and forth with Google AI, I finally got it to give me this command to find the actual uninstall string particular to our machine/install/version from PowerShell (Run as Admin):

Which output the string specific I guess to our particular volume license of Office Standard 2016 (your string may differ from ours, so presumably run the query in PowerShell (Run as Admin) and get the actual uninstaller string for your copy/version, this is ours, but YYMV if you have a slightly different version of Office Standard/Pro 2016/2019, etc.?):

Click "Hide Updates" and now ... THERE'S the bugger! Tick the KB5002914 (AKA, "Security Update for Microsoft Excel") to tell it to hide it, and click "Next".

Problem fixed! (In theory, now KB5002914 will no longer attempt to auto-reinstall until/unless you run the show/hide utility again to "unhide" the update and then let Windows see the update into order to apply some future hotfix or whatever. Or just leave it hidden and out of sight, out of mind until they release a new hotfix that includes both the security update plus the patch in one package, for anyone who hid it? Assuming they do that?)

Just for giggles and to be sure, never hurts to then restart the machine to save the update/fix or whatnot. ^_^

After update, it appears I'm able to still / once again click & drag to fill, copy & paste, etc.

Didn't see KB5002914 in windows update queue. Ran update queue, and doesn't look like it reinstalled. So I assume it's successfully hidden from Windows Update via the tool. So it looks like it's successfully resolved & hidden.

Oof, digging out that tick was a slog. But...

Hope this helps folks find their correct uninstall string/path (via PowerShell Admin), uninstall (via Command Prompt Admin), and hide the stupid broken update (via old deprecated/unsupported Show/Hide Updates tool [still works, still useful, why did they get rid of this wunderkind app??]) until Microsoft gets off their duffs and issues a hotfix for what they broke? ^_^

I have tried both methods above as an admin and still the inability to cut and paste remains. Any other suggestions?

At very worst, find the EXCEL.EXE file from an unpatched computer and copy it to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\ folder after the update has been applied.

This will prevent Windows from re-installing the erroneous update again.
